Skepticism was written as part of Italian clarinetist Arianna Tieghi's project to collect a work for solo clarinet from each of the fifty states. To represent Missouri, I decided to focus on the typically skeptical nature of Missourians. The piece begins with an overly doubtful 12-tone row, which is transformed into a convincing melody by the end of the work.
