Deus in Machina is a theme and variation on the Hanson Place hymn tune (Shall We Gather at the River). Each variation is manipulated electronically to serve as accompaniment for the following variation, resulting in ongoing abstraction of the source material. The work culminates in a variation that brings back the previously-recorded variations, allowing the performer to participate in a piano quintet.
