Frequently Asked Questions

1. What did I miss/What are we going to do/Did we do anything important?

While I applaud the fact you are looking into the work you missed, due to the number of classes and students I have I cannot always address these questions individually. Please check with your classmates or with the resources on Canvas.

2. Can I make up my work?

That depends greatly on why you need to make up work. If you fall into one of the several categories listed on the syllabus, and you submit a Make Up Work request at (https://kylevanderburg.com/forms/make-up/) in a timely fashion, then sure. If you have another good reason, let's talk about it. If you don't fall into the categories and/or don't have a good reason, then probably not.

3. What's an excused absence?

According to the syllabus, an excused absence is one that occurs due to religious observances, health reasons, Provost-approved University-sponsored events, or legally required activities. This does not include extracurricular activities or obligations to other classes (such as tests).

4. Is there anything I can do to bring my grade up?

This is a complicated, time dependent question. Although I teach several different types of classes that have different requirements, here are the overarching points:

If you're asking on the first day of class:
Some combination of showing up regularly, submitting required assignments in a timely fashion, being insightful, working hard, and contributing in class will guarantee you an adequate grade.

If you're asking after midterm grades are submitted:
The first thing I do when students ask me this question is check their attendance. If your attendance rate is low, change that. If you're missing assignments, start turning them in on time. If you are struggling with the material then let's talk.

If you're asking in the last 4 weeks of class
Probably not, but again I'll check on your attendance.

If you're asking during dead week:
No.

If you're asking during finals week:
Absolutely not.

If you're asking after finals week:
I will ignore your email.

5. Where are the concert halls?

When you enter Catlett Music Center through the main doors, you should see the box office immediately in front of you. The doors to Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall are along that same wall, slightly to the left. The doors to Morris R. Pitman Recital Hall are to the left at the end of the hall. The big, echo-y, lobby with exposed beams is Grayce B. Kerr Gothic Hall. If you're looking for the Reynolds Performing Arts Center, it's actually on the north oval, south of the Fred Jones Jr. Fine Arts Center (which is across the street from Boyd House).

6. Will X recital work for a concert report?

Recitals at OU that are listed on Catlett.me will count for concert reports, except those listed as "Convocation". Recitals/concerts not at OU but that are classical in nature will also be counted.

7. Does X recital need tickets?

At OU, concerts that are listed as series need tickets.

8. What should I do if I have a death in the family/am having personal difficulties/need to talk to someone.

The main thing to remember here is communication. Professors are people too, and we can't respond to situations of which we are not aware. Although OU doesn't have a formal bereavement policy, many professors (myself included) prefer to handle this on a case-by-case basis. Please communicate your situation to me/us, and communicate often.

College can be a stressful time for a number of reasons, and OU has some excellent resources for helping. Unfortunately, they're not always easy to find. If you need help finding these resources, please let me know, and I'll help out as I can.

9. I have feedback on the class.

I'm always looking for ways to make this course better, more interesting, more fun, less awful, things like that. You'll have the opportunity to tell the university what an awesome (or lack thereof) job I'm doing, but if you want to make suggestions or provide feedback, there's a feedback form at https://kylevanderburg.com/forms/student-feedback/.
